The girl I used to be

A friend recently scanned and posted some old youth group photos on facebook.  It was a shock to sign in and see my 15-year-old self looking back at me from my computer screen.  Please allow me to introduce her:

That's me! Other faces have been obscured to protect the innocent. 🙂

At fifteen, I was involved in a Christian drama group.  We’d go to churches and camps and perform a piece designed to tell the story of man’s sin and Christ’s sacrifice, and we would usually sing a few songs and share our testimonies.  There were around 30 of us who were actively involved in this ministry throughout my freshman year of high school, and we really hit our stride in the summer of 2001.  We were just a group of kids, ages 12 to 20, empowered by our families and our community to be a part of this amazing outreach.  We touched lives, or rather, God touched lives through us.  There’s no question.

I can remember so clearly the feeling of that summer, of listening to the testimonies of my friends, of laughing and crying and laughing again.  We shared everything.  That summer, I had 30 best friends, and we spent those sunny months traveling around our state, just a bunch of kids who were completely on fire for God.

Fall came, and some of us left for college, and we began to struggle.  There was no clear leadership.  Though we stayed friends, the heady feeling from that summer was gone.  Our ministry fizzled out.  We grieved for it, and we still grieve.  I think back, nearly ten years later, on that time when we so clearly felt the Holy Spirit moving, and I think how much more could have been done through us.

My own relationship with God has wavered in the years since.  I went to college and did not have a real understanding of the importance of fellowship and of staying in His Word, and I allowed myself to get incredibly lazy in my walk with God.  It’s only recently, now that I am back around family and attending church regularly and helping with local youth, that I feel like I am growing in the Lord again.  Slowly but surely, I am being shaped into the woman He wants me to be.  It’s quite a process, and it’s hard sometimes, but I know I will come out of it looking more like Him.

For several years now, I’ve been feeling a subtle pull towards youth ministry, and lately this pull has intensified.  I don’t have a clear direction at this point, but I have a heart for teens.  I was incredibly blessed to have the support system and the network of friends I had as a teenager, but I know that not everyone has that.  I’d love to see kids on fire for God the way we were that summer.  I’d love to see them experiencing Him, serving Him, serving others.  I’d love to see blessings falling down all around us.

I know that this space is normally pretty frivolous, and I wasn’t even intending on writing all of this.  I just thought it might be fun to share some pictures of myself as a teenager, but then I realized that I can’t talk about myself at that age without talking about the drama ministry.  God was working on me then, and thankfully, He’s still working on me now!

One more, for fun:

I'm not really sure what I'm doing.

God has blessed me with beautiful memories.

29 and holding…

These pictures are filled with sunlight.  It makes me think of the old hymn, “beautiful sunlight, heavenly sunlight, flooding my soul with glory divine…”

I wore my dress as a tunic, clever girl that I am.

Even though I can’t deny that I didn’t put much thought into this outfit, I am pretty pleased with the way it turned out.

I had a fantastic weekend.  I helped out at a 30 hour famine, and it was a huge blessing.  The spirit of God was moving, and kids were being changed.  I saw it.  I spent a lot of my time at the famine in a t-shirt and jeans, but this is what I wore to church yesterday morning.

Outfit #22 already!  This challenge is flying by.

We’ve had a few warm days lately, but they seem to be at an end.  I was freezing while taking these pictures!  Tights were definitely necessary today.  I love this skirt, even though it rides up and does weird things because the lining is so slippery.  I think it will work no matter the season.  I can’t wait to style it for warmer weather!

Since this is what I wore to church, let me just say that church was awesome this morning.  So many people praising the Lord for the things He’s done in their lives.  I love when the Spirit fills the church and there are people popping up left and right to offer praises or lift up prayer requests.  And the sermon today was about how Jesus is Lord of ALL things, not just some things, and that we can trust Him with absolutely anything and everything that’s going on in our lives.  I needed to hear that today.  Did you?

Good Sunday evening to you all!

So I meant to post about an hour ago, but then I started reading an old blog of mine and got completely sidetracked.

We woke up to snow on our road and decided not to go to church, so we went back to bed and slept pretty late today.  When I did get up, I did some sewing (a new skirt!) and then made some dinner and some soup to take for lunch through the week.  All in all, it was a pretty uneventful day.

Honestly, this whole week has been uneventful, not that I’m complaining.  I’ve had several days off from work due to all the snow we’ve gotten, and so I’ve had some time to clean and decorate and craft.  I’ve taken pictures of some of my creations, but for some reason, when I upload pictures, they are all messed up and have lines across them.  I’m not sure what that’s about.  I think it might be a problem with my memory card.

So really, I don’t have an exciting post for you tonight.  Not even any pictures!  I think I might switch out my memory card, and maybe I can get some outfit pictures tomorrow.

What I Wore

Another outfit post!  Two in one day.  Here’s what I wore to church this morning:

Posing in the backyard.

Nice big picture, huh?  I mentioned in my last post that my husband and I went shopping last night.  Here’s some of the stuff I scored!  I’d been eyeing this dress at American Eagle for months, but last night I discovered that it was on clearance, plus take an extra 30% off the clearance price, plus an extra 10% off at the register.  I bought it, determined to make it work for fall/winter.  I threw on the same sweater from yesterday (get used to seeing it; I wear it all the time), some brown tights, and the fabulous vintage boots I got at Goodwill last night for $4.  They are cognac leather and they are amazing, but they are also very narrow and they barely fit me.  I was in some pain when this picture was taken.  I can definitely put up with them for just a few hours at a time, though.

You also saw the bag and the bracelets yesterday.  I decided to roll with a vintagey theme today, and so I wore the locket my grandparents (Nan-Nan and Pap-Paw, of course) got for me when I was a baby:

My lovely locket. I will have to remember to use the macro setting next time.

And I wore the signet ring also given to me by my Nan-Nan.  It belonged to my great-grandmother, whose name was Letha, so it has a lovely L (though you can’t see it here):

My ring!

I also picked up a vintage trench at Goodwill for $3:

My new trench.

I’m pretty pleased with it!  It’s in really good condition.  At some point, I might replace the buttons and buckles to give it a bit more oomph, but I’m not sure yet.  I’d been wanting a trench for a long time, and I found one at Goodwill, so I’m pretty pumped.

I might be back later to post about something possibly non-outfit related, but we’ll see.  Until next time, have a great Sunday!
